Mystic Messenger is a Korean otome game released in 2016 for iPhone and Android. After downloading an app promising conversations with cute boys, an unknown number leads you to a mysterious apartment where you end up joining the RFA. Your goal now is to simultaneously romance one of five (though Another Story features two additional routes) characters and invite guests to a fundraising party in 11 days. Chatrooms with these boys (and one girl) appear in real time. The game features translations in Korean, English, and Spanish.

I first downloaded the game in 2018 - specifically 11/24/18. Not wanting to use my real name, I entered the name Elyssa and fell in love at first sight with Yoosung. At the time, it was difficult to properly play the game as I was nocturnal and most of the chatrooms appear in the daytime. The first time I played, I got Yoosung's BRE 1. I still remember sobbing when I finally got his good ending. Though you can never miss the party at the end, I would always get up early to play it on time.

One of my favorite aspects of the game is the soundtrack. My favorite tracks are Same Old Fresh Air, Life with Masks, Light and Daffodils, I am the strongest, and Mint Eye. I found this game at the perfect time while I was receiving piano lessons to make me truly appreciate piano compositions.

I wish Jaehee was treated better. My memories of the game are very fuzzy because I haven't played it in maybe four years but I remember the game making a lot of antagonists female. From a Watsonian perspective I suppose it makes sense - the characters are all intended to be heterosexual, and the theme is important for Jumin and Zen's routes, but it does seem off from a Doylist perspective. Would it be different if the genders were swapped? Perhaps that's something to ponder.

I love how the Mystic Messenger wiki has a giant banner on Unknown's wiki page - This character is not an accurate representation of people with mental illness!
